Navigating retirement after the loss of a loved one

Gordon had just reached retirement age while also experiencing the heartache of losing his wife. Gordon had always been diligent about his financial planning but now, with retirement looming and personal circumstances changing dramatically, he realised he needed professional guidance to make the right decisions for his future. Gordon had some key concerns about getting financial advice though, worries over cost, time and whether financial advice genuinely adds value. As an NHS worker Gordon only had four years left until he could access his state pension and was wary of unnecessary expenses and the importance of getting things right.

In Gordon’s words: “I had reached retirement age and had just lost my wife. Although I have a small amount of experience with pension advisers, I needed proper professional help so I could make the correct decisions going forward, but my main concern was cost. Would it be worth it? I already had a pension in place, and it was only four years until I reached state pension age.”

The introduction to Scott Gurd

A close friend recommended that Gordon speak to Scott Gurd at Unividual. Although Scott is a Shaftesbury based financial adviser he works out of the Bath office and a lot of his clients are spread across the surrounding counties.  Gordon was initially hesitant, because of his concerns, but was reassured when his friend reminded him that there is a free first consultation and he thought, “What have I got to lose?”

During their first meeting, Scott listened carefully to Gordon’s concerns and ambitions, taking the time to understand his unique situation. Scott’s approachable manner, coupled with his ability to break down complex financial concepts into simple, understandable terms, immediately put Gordon at ease.

The financial action plan

Together, Scott and Gordon developed a comprehensive action plan focused on consolidating Gordon’s finances. Scott’s use of technology and visual aids made it easier for Gordon to grasp the options available, allowing him to make informed decisions with confidence. Gordon noted: “To start with, Scott put an action plan in place, of course with my input. This was to consolidate my finances and pay off my mortgage, which was coming to an end. Scott Gurd is a very approachable adviser who explains everything in simple terms, along with the technology and graphics, which really help me understand all of the options available to me.”

Scott’s extensive experience and knowledge provided Gordon with the expertise he needed, offering insights that significantly enhanced the way he managed his personal finances. The process not only addressed Gordon’s immediate needs but also laid the groundwork for a secure and well-planned retirement. Reflecting on the experience Gordon concluded: “Scott’s wealth of experience and knowledge gained me an advantage over my own way of managing my personal finances, and I thank him for this.”
